The Musical Jersey Boys
Funny, touching and inspiring!
The musical ran on Broadway from 2005 to 2017 and now we can enjoy it in London.
The musical tells the story of The Four Seasons, a world-famous, internationally successful American rock and roll and doo-wop band formed in New Jersey in 1960, and the friendship, loss and respect they shared.
The Four Seasons were renowned for their vocals, and you will be in awe of this in the musical itself!
Excellent Performance!
Sometimes you don’t want a big, shiny set, you just want to enjoy an excellent performance, and this was just that!
The score was composed by Bob Gaudio, the original band’s producer, keyboardist and vocalist, and the musical features all their greatest hits, from Big Girls Don’t Cry to Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, all beautifully performed. When I found out that Luke Suri, who plays Frankie Valli, was making his West End debut in Jersey Boys, I was stunned!!
Here is an interview with this talented talented actor:
I feel that sometimes musicals rely a lot on their numbers – but not this musical!
Jersey Boys had great numbers and also strong scenes and, more importantly, powerful shifts from moment to moment that helped tell the story.
I really enjoyed the fact that there was not a single ‘wasted’ movement or unnecessary step on stage. Every move took us deeper into the story or led us to the next scene. This is due to the amazing acting skills of the cast, as well as their precise and unified ensemble performance, which reflects the superb (!) work done by director Des McAnuff.
Unlike ‘Aint Too Proud‘, in this musical, each of the band’s characters tells a part of the story, so by the end of the show you have a closure with each character.
There was a beautiful moment when the band reunited for another performance and one of them asked the others if they believe they are here on this stage, which is quite unique when you know the victories the actors have had to get to this point in their lives, for me it added another layer.
The venue itself is not large compared to other London theatres, with a total capacity of 636, and telling this big story in this intimate space worked brilliantly.
A well-deserved award winning musical!
Go and allow yourself to move your bump in the chair :)
