Ain’t Too Proud
Background
Ain’t Too Proud is a new, feel-good, high-energy musical that tells the story of the 1960s band The Temptations, from their humble beginnings in Detroit to the Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
The band that defined the sound of ‘Motown’, known for their bold harmonies, unique choreography and striking wardrobe. Needless to say, they topped the charts!
The Plot
The story begins in the 1950’s when Otis Williams, after visiting a club in Detroit, decides that his life’s calling is to make music and to sing.
He meets Melvin Franklin, who has a particularly thick bass voice, gathers Eddy Kendricks, who has an impressive tenor, and Paul Williams, a powerful baritone, and they form the Aligns.
After signing with the legendary Motown record company, they changed their name to the name of the record, The Temptations.
When their first lead singer left, they found the charismatic David Ruffin, with whom they recorded ‘My Girl’, which became a huge hit.
Ruffin was regarded as a ‘troublemaker’ but also as a great singer who led them to unprecedented chart success.
Away from the spotlight, as with any worldwide fame, personal and political conflicts between the band members began to emerge, threatening the band’s future.
As time went on there were bitter arguments between the members.
These included behaviour such as violence and alcohol, as well as artistic and political disagreements.
About The Musical
The musical came to London after a huge success on Broadway.
The musical was originally produced by Otis Williams, the founding member of Temptation, and features spellbinding Tony Award-winning choreography and Grammy Award-winning music.
It’s a moving story of brotherhood, loyalty and betrayal, set to the beat of the band’s greatest hits, including My Girl, Just My Imagination, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Get Ready, to mention a few!
The minimalist set served the musical, portraying the band’s colourful uniqueness, vocals, melodies, harmonies and movements.
We loved the musical and enjoyed the inevitable ‘visit’ from the Supremes, Motown’s all-female band, who appear from time to time to perform songs throughout the musical and the relationships that are formed.
At the end of the musical, get ready to dance with the grand orchestra that accompanies the show live.
